Getaway Guide to Visiting Atlantic City, NJ

Classic Charm Meets a Modern Revival

Set along New Jersey’s famed shoreline, Atlantic City has long been known for its bustling boardwalk and lively casinos, but this coastal destination offers so much more than bright lights and gaming tables. In recent years, the city has been going through an exciting revival, with new restaurants, entertainment, and attractions breathing fresh life into its storied seaside charm. Whether you’re seeking world-class dining, a bit of relaxation by the ocean, or unforgettable entertainment, Atlantic City delivers a getaway that feels both classic and newly reimagined. From its iconic boardwalk and historic landmarks to trendy cocktail lounges and one-of-a-kind shows, this guide will help you plan a trip that captures the very best of this evolving destination.

STAY

On my recent Atlantic City getaway, I stayed at Caesars Atlantic City, one of the city’s most iconic resorts with a long history of being a go-to spot on the boardwalk. Its location couldn’t be better. You’re steps from the ocean and right in the center of all the action, which made it easy to get around and soak in everything Atlantic City has to offer. I stayed in one of the newly renovated rooms in the Centurion Tower, and the update made a huge difference. The space felt fresh, modern, and comfortable, the perfect place to unwind after busy days out exploring.

SEE & DO

A trip to Atlantic City wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the Steel Pier, the historic amusement hub on the boardwalk. From classic rides to games, it has that timeless boardwalk energy, but the real standout is The Wheel. Towering above the ocean, this giant observation wheel offers sweeping views of the shoreline and city skyline, especially magical as the sun sets.

For those looking to unwind, the Exhale Spa + Bathhouse at Ocean Casino Resort delivers pure relaxation. Previously ranked the number one spa in New Jersey, it features a Himalayan salt grotto, jetted pools, and soothing lounge spaces that make it easy to spend hours here. I had the signature massage during my visit, and it was incredible. Exactly what I needed to recharge before diving back into the excitement of Atlantic City.

Exploring the Atlantic City Boardwalk on two wheels is an absolute must. Rentals from North Beach Mini Golf & Bike Rentals make it simple to cruise the shoreline, and nothing beats pedaling along with ocean views on one side and the buzz of the boardwalk on the other.

To see Atlantic City from a different angle, the Morning Skyline Cruise with Atlantic City Cruises is a refreshing way to start the day. The company departs from Historic Gardner’s Basin and offers sailings from spring through fall, with morning departures that are perfect for catching the coastal breeze and panoramic city views. The ride blends sightseeing with a bit of local history, making it equal parts relaxing and scenic. It is an ideal way to soak in the beauty of the shoreline before diving into the rest of the day’s activities.

The Island Waterpark at Showboat Resort is one of Atlantic City’s most exciting new attractions and it truly feels like a playground for all ages. As the largest indoor beachfront waterpark in the world, it’s packed with slides, a surf simulator, and plenty of space to splash around, but the lazy river ended up being a personal favorite for a more laid-back vibe. For adults, there’s even a dedicated area with a swim-up bar and lounges that give the whole space a more elevated, resort-like feel. Cabana rentals are also available if you want a little extra space to lounge.

If there is one thing Atlantic City knows how to do it is most certainly how to put on an amazing show. One of the most unique shows you can see in Atlantic City is  THE HOOK by Spiegelworld, staged inside the newly restored Warner Theatre at Caesars. The show combines over-the-top comedy, jaw-dropping acrobatics, and a bit of risqué fun, creating an experience that feels both outrageous and unforgettable. With an international cast of performers, everything from high-flying aerial stunts to quirky characters you are sure to be kept at the edge of your seat, I know I was.

What makes THE HOOK stand out is how immersive it feels. The intimate size of the theater brings you right into the action, and the mix of humor, daring acts, and bold energy is unlike anything else you’ll find on the boardwalk. It’s wild, unexpected, and absolutely a must-see.

Just outside the city, Lucy the Elephant in Margate is a true piece of Americana and officially recognized as America’s oldest roadside attraction. Built in 1881, this six-story elephant-shaped building was originally designed to draw attention to real estate in the area and has since become a beloved National Historic Landmark. Visitors can climb inside for a guided tour, which takes you through Lucy’s interior up to the howdah (the “room” on her back) where you’ll find panoramic views of the shoreline. Quirky, historic, and completely unique, Lucy is a must-see stop that adds a fun, nostalgic note to any Atlantic City getaway.

DRINK & DINE

Breakfast + Brunch

The Sunroom at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa

Tucked inside the MGM Tower, the Sunroom feels like a calming escape with its garden-inspired design, cascading water features, and natural light pouring in. It’s a peaceful spot for brunch away from the casino buzz, with a menu that balances fresh flavors and comfort food. I ordered the strawberry cream cheese pancakes, and they were every bit as indulgent as they sound—fluffy, sweet, and packed with flavor.

Sunny’s at Ocean Casino Resort
Breakfast at Sunny’s comes with sweeping views of the ocean and a bright, cheerful atmosphere that instantly sets the tone for the day. The menu puts a modern twist on classic comfort dishes, so you’ll find familiar favorites with bold flavors. I ordered the Denver Omelette, packed with cheddar, ham, peppers, onions, and served alongside crispy potatoes, and it was absolutely delicious. Hearty, flavorful, and the perfect start before a busy day in Atlantic City.

Hayday Coffee
This cozy coffee shop is all about community and good vibes. Whether you’re grabbing a latte or one of their baked treats, it feels like the perfect morning pick-me-up before heading out for a busy day.

Lunch + Dinner + Drinks

Forno Roman Pizza
Located right on the boardwalk, Forno serves up Roman-style pizza that’s light, crispy, and full of flavor. It’s casual, welcoming, and the kind of place where you can grab a quick lunch that still feels special.

Knife & Fork Inn
Dining at the Knife & Fork Inn feels like stepping into a piece of Atlantic City’s history. Established in 1912, this landmark restaurant has hosted generations of visitors, and its old-world charm is still very much alive today. From the warm wood-paneled dining rooms to the menu filled with juicy steaks, fresh seafood, and classic sides, every detail carries a sense of tradition. It’s the kind of place where the atmosphere is just as memorable as the food, making it a true must visit for anyone who wants a taste of Atlantic City’s storied past.

Cardinal
Cardinal is one of Atlantic City’s newer restaurants, and it brings a fresh, modern touch to the dining scene. The menu focuses on seasonal ingredients and global inspiration, serving a dinner that feels creative without being overcomplicated. Easy, casual atmosphere with an awesome outdoor space.

Il Mulino at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City

This upscale Italian restaurant brings a refined, Old-World flavor to Atlantic City, blending rustic Italian tradition with a polished dining experience. During my visit, I tried their chicken parmigiana and it hit that perfect balance of comfort and elegance. They also had an amazing seafood platter special featuring a mix of fresh oysters and shrimp. For dessert, I watched chefs perform a live strawberry flambé right at the table over ice cream. A dramatic, sweet finish that paired beautifully with the rest of the evening.

Gordon Ramsay Hell’s Kitchen at Caesars Atlantic City

Inspired by the hit Gordon Ramsay show, Hell’s Kitchen is as dramatic as it is delicious. With its signature red and blue design and a menu filled with Ramsay favorites, dinner here feels like stepping onto the set of the show itself. The filet mignon and mac and cheese here alone will quite simply change your life.

MAYA at Resorts Casino Hotel

With a Riviera meets Tulum vibe right on the boardwalk, MAYA’s cocktail menu leans into that tropical energy with flair. One standout is their Endless Summer, which comes served in a golden pineapple, a playful nod to beachside escapes. The food is just as fun- the pork nachos special were especially to die for. The mix of bold flavors and creative presentation makes Maya a can’t miss for cocktails and small bites before or after dinner.

Angeloni’s Club Madrid
For a taste of vintage Atlantic City, Angeloni’s Club Madrid is the kind of place that transports you back in time. Styled after the city’s Italian lounges of the 1980s, it’s intimate, moody, and full of character. Strong cocktails, a warm welcome, and a sense of nostalgia make it a perfect stop for happy hour. perfectly encapsulating a little old-school Atlantic City charm before dinner.

Bar 32 Chocolate
If you’re looking for something truly unique, Bar 32 Chocolate delivers an indulgent experience that blends craft cocktails with decadent desserts. Everything here is made with house crafted, single origin chocolate, so even the drinks carry rich cocoa notes in unexpected ways. The menu pushes the limits of flavor pairings, from sea salt dusted confections to bold, chocolate infused cocktails. The creativity behind each item makes it a destination all on its own. Be sure to check out their event calendar for fun happenings like bingo and drag performances.

Horse Dive Bar
Right next to The Hook at Caesars, the Horse Dive Bar is anything but ordinary. The space is packed with quirky details and vintage décor that give it a playful, offbeat vibe, almost like a carnival dive bar with an Atlantic City twist.  Perfect for a pre-show drink or to keep the night going after the curtain comes down.

Atlantic City is a destination that thrives on reinvention, and this trip proved just how much the city’s revival is in full swing. From historic landmarks and iconic boardwalk attractions to sleek new restaurants, cocktail lounges, and over-the-top entertainment, it’s clear why it has long been called America’s Playground. Nowhere else combines oceanfront glamour, quirky roadside history, and wonderfully weird charm quite like Atlantic City – a place that will forever be timeless and brand new all at once.
