The ultimate getaway guide:

Brandywine
Valley

Trip to Europe cancelled this summer? Consider visiting these European inspired estates and gardens located just a 2 hour drive from DC instead

A lesser known weekend getaway destination,
Brandywine Valley stretches the border of Delaware and Pennsylvania and is only around 2 hours from the Washington DC area. A drive along this rolling countryside is not only picturesque but stocked with history, art, wineries, European architecture and arguably the best gardens in the country. The Dupont family immigrated to Brandywine from France in the 1800s and prospered into what many call American royalty. The roots they laid here have been immaculately preserved and today they’re legacy remains. Whether you come for the history, the wildflowers and meadows or even the wine you’ll find there is something uniquely magic and fairytale-esque about this beautiful valley where time stands still.

What To See & Do
In Brandywine Valley

While planning your getaway be sure to check with the attractions websites as linked for the most current info on hours of operation and policies in relation to Covid-19 safety (images courtesy of chester county media)

Nemours Estate and Gardens

This 105 room mansion modeled after Versailles sits on over 300 acres. Arguably the grandest Du-Pont estate, this neo-classical gem is absolutely astounding and definitely a staple on any Brandywine road trip. Tours are self guided and paced allowing guests to take in as much or as little as they choose.

Longwood Gardens

Whatever you do, do not skip out on Longwood gardens!

Considered one of the great gardens of the world- it features 1,100 acres of meadows, gardens, and woodlands including a 4 acre conservatory. The highlight of any visit to Longwood is easily the evening illuminated fountain show. Free with admission, each evening guests can marvel as 1,719 water jets dance in the night sky reaching as high as 175 feet. The show is choreographed with music, lights and even some flames of fire. When I say this experience is magic, I’m talking on a Disney for adults level scale- do not miss out on this!

Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library

Of all the Dupont estate properties, this one was my favorite by far.

What once was the Dupont family’s summer retreat, this 175 room mansion now houses the worlds most impressive collection of historical American décor (1640-1860). Room after room has been immaculately recreated and will make a history buff into just about anyone who visits. While exploring the properties gardens you’ll find an enchanting fairy-tale themed garden. Follow the story stones, over the troll bridge and you’ll find a village of fairy homes and even a giant birds nest to perch inside. Your inner child will thank you for this one, trust me!

Brandywine River Museum of Art

A charming art museum overlooking the Brandywine River, Spacious in its modern design but small enough to not be exhausting or overwhelming. Inside guests will find a diverse collection of both 19th century and modern day American art  housed in an impressively renovated 19th-century mill. The space features a dramatic steel and glass addition overlooking the banks of the Brandywine River.

Additional Highlight Attractions

Mt Cuba Center

This non-profit botanical garden features walking paths and trails stretched over 500 acres of land. The woodland gardens at Mt Cuba are known to have some of the most spectacular displays of wildflowers in the mid-Atlantic region. A perfect place to picnic, take a hike, or simply get some fresh air.

Brandywine Creek
State Park

‘Approximately 1,100 acres of woodlands and meadows, miles of hiking and biking trails, 18-hole disc golf course and 5k cross-country course. Different nature programs for all ages. Canoeing and tubing on the Brandywine River.’

Hagley Museum and Library

On the banks of the Brandywine this property brings back to life the Duponts gun powder yards and the communities of workers who lived and worked here. Visitors can meet and interact with a live cast of characters recreating life in the work village. This is a great spot to stop for lunch and walk the outdoor grounds.

There is also another DuPont estate on this property that visitors can tour. Depending on how much time you have in the area this may be one to skip if you’re low on time.

Eats & Drinks

Dining at Longwood Gardens

Longwood Gardens offers three dining options on site, I highly recommend going this route at least one evening of your trip so you can prioritize being there for the evening fountain shows. Choose from Longwoods fine dining restuaunt '1906' , the cafe market or the beer garden. Most weekends you can sit outside and enjoy live music in the garden while you dine, check their website for dates and details.

Located in downtown Wilmington, this spot serves a wide variety of BBQ eats, craft beers, frozen drinks, and wine in addition to having tons of backyard games on site for guests to play. The list includes corn hole, badminton, boccie, giant jenga, a full-sized wiffleball field, sandboxes, and axe Throwing.

Located just a few miles away from Longwood Gardens is Chaddsford Winery. Stop by for a wine tasting and food pairing in the indoor and outdoor seating spaces. We stopped here before visiting Longwood and LOVED it. The atmosphere was high-spirited with live music & plenty of wine flowing- we had a great time time.
