Guide to a socially distant getaway in

Harpers Ferry, WV

The Wild & Wonderful

Known for its dramatic landscapes and rich history Harpers Ferry is brimming with wilderness and adventure. Just over an hour drive from both Washington DC and Baltimore it’s a no-brainier destination for those looking to get out of town without traveling far. The great outdoors await – travel responsibly!

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park

As of August, 2020 Harpers Ferry national park is in a phased reopening. Currently visitors have access to explore all outdoor areas, hiking trails, and river access points. Indoor shops, museums and restrooms are still closed as I write this so be sure to pack a cooler. Parking will be more limited than usual as some lots are closed to help crowd control. Currently the river access and train station parking lots are open- I recommend planning on an early arrival to get a spot!

Be sure to visit the official park service website to check for the most recent reopening information.

Download the ‘ NPS Harpers Ferry’ App (available on Apple/ Google devices) before your visit! You’ll be able to access park maps, self guided tours, and info on hiking trails. The app is great for mapping out which places you want to see and gauging the difficulty levels of each hiking trail. Here are a few examples from the NPS Harpers Ferry app of my favorite spots in the park…

If you’d like to venture a bit off the beaten path- check out the Outbound Collective and All Trails for guides and reviews of other nearby hiking trails

Thrill seekers rejoice– Harpers Ferry is a great spot for river tubing, rafting, kayaking, and zip lining. There are a few companies you can choose from to do so, I’ve selected two to recommend based on pricing & COVID precautions.
