Aberdeen, NC, with its rich history rooted in the railroad industry, has transformed into a vibrant community where art and history intersect and is located just a few miles from Pinehurst. This small town invites visitors to explore its friendly downtown, where the past is preserved, and creativity flourishes. Among Aberdeen’s attractions, the Artists League of the Sandhills is a stop not to be missed. Housed in a historic railroad depot, this gallery showcases the talents of local artists, offering a glimpse into the region’s artistic soul through diverse mediums and styles. A visit here is a must for art enthusiasts and those looking to take a piece of Carolina’s creativity home.
In addition to its thriving art scene, Aberdeen boasts a variety of shops and dining options that cater to every taste. During my visit I stopped in for lunch at Pizza Grazia and indulged in a delicious wood fired pizza, and can confirm this spot definitely does not disappoint.

Nestled deep in the heart of North Carolina, Seagrove is celebrated for its rich pottery heritage, dating back to the early 18th century. This quaint town has evolved into not just the pottery capital of the Carolinas, but the pottery capital of the entire US drawing enthusiasts and collectors from all over the world to explore its vibrant community of skilled artisans. In a world increasingly driven by mass production, the Seagrove community proudly stands as a stronghold for handmade artistry and cultural preservation, ensuring the art of pottery making is not just survived, but also thrives.
Upon arriving in Seagrove I highly recommend starting with a visit to the NC Pottery Center. This museum not only offers a deep dive into the history and significance of pottery in the region through dynamic exhibits but also provides live demonstrations, giving a firsthand look at the art and craft of pottery making.
Once you finish experiencing the museum, set out to explore the famed Seagrove Pottery Highway (NC Highway 705). While Pinehurst and its surroundings are renowned for their iconic golf courses, my personal experience with golf is limited at best. Nevertheless, embracing the “when in Rome” spirit, I ventured to give it a shot. For beginners like me, or those just looking to have some fun swinging a club, the Talamore Golf Resort is an ideal spot. They offer golf lessons tailored for novices, and their interactive top tracer driving range is a fantastic way to practice your aim and get a feel for the game without the pressure of playing on an actual course.
For those visiting in Spring, the area also offers an especially fun incentive to venture outdoors beyond the golf courses and instead onto the trails. A program called Pinecone Pathways sets out each week to hide beautiful artisan crafted glass pinecones to be found along the local walking and hiking trails. If you’re lucky enough to find one you will be entered to win a variety of incredible prizes. This year’s prizes (2024) range from gift cards and local experiences to a grand prize of two ground passes for one day to attend the 2024 U.S. Open. Check here at the start of each week to see which trails the glass pinecones have been hidden for a chance at finding one.
